Jakarta, 5 December 2021 – Mount Semeru eruption on Saturday (4/12) at around 15.00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) has severed the fiber optic telecommunications infrastructure owned by PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) after the lava flow from the eruption hit the Gladak Perak bridge. However, telecommunications services to and from Lumajang are not disrupted as they are served by alternative routes. Meanwhile, monitoring shows that the automated telephone center and other production equipment remain intact and safe. However, services in several locations were disrupted due to a power outage in the area surrounding the mountain, where customers or local people were understandably vacating the area to evacuate.
Telkom Vice President of Corporate Communication Pujo Pramono said, "We have rerouted the severed Lumajang-Malang network link using another route. Currently we continue to check and expedite service recovery should we encounter disrupted network devices or problems with the power supply. We continue to strive to secure TelkomGroup services so that they can continue to operate normally."
Pujo added that Telkom will also coordinate with the local government to prepare aid posts for the community. "Let's pray, hopefully the people in Lumajang and its surroundings are safe and this disaster will be over soon," Pujo said.
