Telkom Digital Business Director Muhamad Fajrin Rasyid said there is a high demand for digital talent or human resources to face Indonesia's digital transformation, at the BATIC 2022 in Nusa Dua, Bali.

Nusa Dua, 23 September 2022 – The rapid adoption of digital in Indonesia is driving the growth of the digital economy and it contributed significantly to the national GDP. However, Indonesia's digital transformation faces a shortage of digital talent or human resources.

PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) Digital Business Director, Muhamad Fajrin Rasyid said currently there is a very high demand in the ICT industry for digital talent beyond the existing and available talent. "Indonesia is currently lacking digital talent which hampers the technology industry growth, with an estimated unrealized output of USD 21.8 billion," Fajrin said before 600 participants in the Bali Annual Telkom International Conference (BATIC) 2022, in Nusa Dua, Thursday (22/9) .

Quoting data from the World Bank, Fajrin said the rapid growth of the technology sector from 2015 to 2030 will leave Indonesia with a shortage of nine million trained and semi-skilled workers in technology.

In addition, at least in 2018 there were 1,000 technology companies actively looking for digital talent. The number of companies has actually increased 5x from 2017. Ministry data also shows that there is a shortage of 600 thousand per year in demand for technological talent.

Fajrin said Telkom is committed to supporting Indonesian digital innovation and talent development. There are at least three incubation spaces that Telkom has to accommodate and develop innovative ideas from internal and external, such as Tribe, Amoeba and Indigo. Furthermore, ideas that have been incubated and developed by startups will have assistance in managing funds and startup companies will be encouraged to find investors through corporate venture capital, MDI Ventures. Currently MDI has Assets Under Management (AUM) of USD 830 million and more than 70 portfolios, three of which have become unicorns and 11 of which have passed the final investment stage (IPO and M&A).

According to Fajrin, successful digital transformation requires a radical change in mindset towards business, digitization, and talent. The success of digital transformation also requires prerequisites, namely focusing on consumer needs, not being complacent with the core business, not resisting change, not being too slow to innovate, and not being afraid of risks.

In addition, it requires the right business strategy, relying on internal staff recommendations on what is and is not required in daily operations, and growth of will need customer input, while an agile startup culture is a necessity, and ensures that digital transformation does not replace labor.
