Jakarta, 20 May 2021 – PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) continues to accelerate service recovery in Jayapura to ensure customers can resume using TelkomGroup services conveniently.
“Currently, TelkomGroup voice and data services, from fixed broadband IndiHome to Telkomsel mobile broadband, have resumed and customers can use them on a priority basis while waiting for the cable reconnection process that uses a special ship to finish. People in Jayapura and its surroundings can resume their activities by using internet access from TelkomGroup," Telkom Vice President of Corporate Communication Pujo Pramono said in Jakarta (20/5).
TelkomGroup resumed services in Jayapura included Telkomsel voice and data services, IP VPN with 70 Mbps bandwidth and Astinet services for corporate and government customers with a total bandwidth of up to 149 Mbps. Public service agencies that have resumed activities include hospitals, regional communications and information agencies, the military (TNI) and the police, provincial and regional administrations in Papua, the Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), schools and campuses and other agencies. Meanwhile, the IndiHome triple play service is now also available to use. Customers can also enjoy IndiHome TV service with 16 available live channels. In addition, the Wifi-id service at 10 Wifi Corner locations in Jayapura are ready to use for the public. The public can access the internet for free at Wifi Corners located at Kandatel Sentani, Kandatel Abepura, Telkom STO 1 Jayapura and Telkom BaseG. Telkom also provides a media center for journalists at the Witel Papua Office.
TelkomGroup services availability in Jayapura is powered by 4.7 Gbps bandwidth capacity, with the support of 2,662 Mbps satellite links, 500 Mbps East Palapa Ring long haul radio and 1,600 Mbps Sarmi – Biak long haul radio.
Meanwhile, a special ship has set sail from Makassar to Jayapura on 19 May, 2021 to repair the severed cables. Apart from bringing a team of experts who will reconnect the cables, the ship was also equipped with technical equipment to lift and repair the submarine cables. The ship has secured the Underwater Work Order (SPKBA) permit from the Director General of Sea Transportation of the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation and other security clearance documents. Telkom Infra, one of Telkom's subsidiaries, supervised the cable repair, which is scheduled to finalize in the first week of June 2021.
"This is a challenge and a commitment for us to strive for the best in repairing the severed SMPCS submarine cable communication system so that people can resume having the best quality service from TelkomGroup," Pujo said.
At the end of April, the TelkomGroup service in Jayapura was disrupted after the Sulawesi Maluku Papua Cable System (SMPCS) submarine cable communication system on the Biak - Jayapura section was severed at the bottom of the sea, about 280 km from Biak and 360 km from Jayapura. The cause of the undersea fiber optic rupture was believed due to natural factors, considering the location of the disconnected cable was 4,050 m deep, and beyond exposure to maritime activities such as fishing, ship anchors, and others. Telkom will only be able to further identify the cause of the cable break after removing the cable from the sea.
