One of the locations where Telkom distributes its clean water and sanitation facilities aid.

Jakarta, 26 October 2022 - Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics in 2021 showed at least 19.71% of households in Indonesia do not have access to clean water or proper sanitation, especially in the outermost, frontier, and underdeveloped areas. As a form of its social responsibility, PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) runs a clean water facility assistance program to improve proper sanitation for Indonesian people. This program does not only focus on increasing the percentage of access to clean water, but has broader long-term goals including increasing the public health index and accelerating the reduction in malnutrition rates caused by water quality in the area.

Telkom distributed its assistance within its seven regional business areas from Sabang to Merauke. The assistance has been distributed to 70 locations where 68,740 people have benefitted from. To achieve the long-term goal of improving public health, Telkom also seeks to provide understanding to the community about good sanitation by increasing public awareness and training on hygiene for beneficiary communities.

"Telkom carries out this social intervention to introduce planned changes to society, both individuals and communities to a better direction through sustainable programs. We always measure and evaluate the success of our efforts to ensure that social functions are carried out according to expectations," Senior General Manager of CDC Telkom, Hery Susanto said.

This is a manifestation of Telkom's commitment to support national sustainable development initiatives in accordance with the globally agreed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this case, Telkom runs various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, one of which is related to the SDGs number six, namely equal access to clean water and sanitation.

The construction of clean water access infrastructure that Telkom carried out has gone through many measurements and considerations at each location so that it does not cause damage to the surrounding environment. The process of distribution and installation of clean water infrastructure in the form of clean water devices and networks as well as revitalization of facilities is made by utilizing the nearest spring at each location.

A survey conducted at each location showed that locals have to travel hundreds to thousands of meters on a daily basis to get clean water directly from the source. Therefore, Telkom developed an infrastructure to access clean water, such as a permanent storage container connected to the nearest spring, which is then channeled using a pipe network directly to residents' homes.

This program has been running well and has provided many benefits to the community. According to a village head recipient of the assistance, residents benefit from this program more than just to meet basic needs, but also to irrigate rice fields and gardens, which are the people's source of livelihoods. This program will surely continue with a target to reach 100 locations throughout Indonesia. Telkom expects that in the future, all people can have access to clean water and proper sanitation.
