The company is committed to supporting carbon emissions reduction while providing clean and affordable energy for the community.
Banyuwangi, 8 November 2023 – Energy transition has increasingly captured global attention because it represents efforts to mitigate inevitable environmental damage. At the 2022 G20 Summit in Bali, one of the priority topics discussed was energy transition, with agreements outlined in the Leaders' Declaration points 11 and 12. These points underscore the urgency of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2060.
According to data from the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Indonesia's electricity demand per capita will reach 1,172 kWh in 2022 and is expected to rise further due to the country's targeted 5.3% economic growth in 2023, underlining the critical need for additional power generators using new, renewable energy sources.
In line with Indonesia's commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 358 million tons of CO2 by 2030, PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) aims to uphold this commitment by constructing a micro hydro power plant in Tlocor village, Sempu district, Banyuwangi regency, East Java.
"Through this program, we aim for the micro hydro power plant in Tlocor village to be optimally utilized., this initiative can also uncover new opportunities for the local community from untapped village potentials," Telkom SGM Community Development Center Hery Susanto said.
The remote Tlocor village, which only has 23 households has the potential to generate 7 kW mechanical (equivalent to 5.4 kW electrical) with a flow rate of 0.35 m3/s and a head of approximately 5.2 meters. This underscores the feasibility of implementing a micro hydro power plant.
During its construction, Telkom collaborated with the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) to assess the program's sustainability. Activities ranged from mapping the Tlocor village area and its potential, to manufacturing components for the micro hydro power plant, and conducting system verification tests. Training and support were provided to beneficiaries, with the aim of ensuring the program's future sustainability.
Previously, Tlocor village relied solely on a local 300-watt water wheel for electricity, primarily for lighting. With the new micro hydro power plant, the village now generates a total of 4.2 kilowatts of electrical power, benefiting over 100 residents. The average power output of 450 watts is sufficient for 20 households and two public facilities, such as schools and prayer rooms.
The construction of the micro hydro power plant aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, which promotes access to clean and affordable energy. Additionally, the program enhances Tlocor village's tourism potential and supports community empowerment, fostering the village's path to self-sufficiency by 2025.
The Tlocor village community expressed gratitude for Telkom's efforts in providing clean and affordable energy through the establishment of the micro hydro power plant. Residents greatly appreciate the assistance as a reliable electricity source, and for future management, the plant will be overseen by local residents through an established organizational structure.
"As a digital telecommunications company and a state-owned enterprise committed to societal well-being, Telkom is dedicated to fostering sustainable innovation that supports community development, enhances living standards, and boosts the competitiveness of the Indonesian people," Hery said.
