Jakarta, 4 January 2023 - PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) has strengthened its steps to secure its part and to become a big player in the data center industry after the groundbreaking of NeutraDC Hyperscale Data Center (HDC) Batam in December last year. Telkom does not only have large capacity with Tier 3 and Tier 4 standards, HDC Batam will also be part of the TelkomGroup data center ecosystem that is connected to national and international data centers, edge data centers, and hyperscale data centers in Cikarang.
Telkom Wholesale and International Service Director Bogi Witjaksono said on one occasion that one of the keys to a data center's success is the level of efficiency in energy use. “In the future, the computing capabilities of data center occupants, which in this case are digital players, will increase, so it requires a lot of energy. For this reason, these digital players need efficient and green energy. We will show that by mid 2024 at the latest data centers based on blue and environmentally-friendly energy will exist in Indonesia."
Telkom is working with Medco on this renewable energy technology and green energy, and will involve state-owned utility company PLN for its distribution. Telkom is also working with Singtel, an old data center player in Singapore. Both parties are ready to capture the potential needs of spillover demand originating from Singapore and its surroundings, as well as meeting domestic needs in Indonesia.
Bogi said by 2030 Indonesia will need at least a minimum of 1,200 MegaWatt or 1.2 GW data center. This is a very big opportunity to capture Indonesia's demography, which makes expansion necessary. Telkom in this case can become part of the dominant players and move quickly to build a data center ecosystem.
"All aspects of our life in the future will be connected digitally. It is estimated that the database from IoT and devices is much larger than our current demands for ordinary broadband. Telkom as a government agent on digitalization must think beyond, not only about building a data center but rather building its ecosystem in order to prepare this country for digital sovereignty," Bogi said.
In the next two years, TelkomGroup will focus on strengthening and developing its data center to capture market opportunities for global digital players. TelkomGroup is trying to ensure the data center developments will be soon completed, get the data center utilized, and it becomes a major data center player in the Southeast Asian market and the wider region, enhancing the steps to accelerate national digital sovereignty.
