Jayapura, 1 October 2021 – Ahead of the grand opening of the 20th National Games (PON) in Papua on 2 October 2021, final preparations are underway including preparation on network and telecommunications services infrastructure. The opening ceremony will be held at the Lukas Enembe Stadium, and President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo and other VVIP guests will attend the event.

PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero), Tbk (Telkom) as the official information and communications technology (ICT) partner in the 20th PON has prepared infrastructure support and ICT services to make the national games week a success, by providing ICT services at the venues, athletes village, media centers, and other supporting infrastructure.

Telkom deployed more than 1,000  technicians and proactive assistants who will be on duty during the event, to ensure the quality of network infrastructure and telecommunication services during the 20th PON. They consist of special technicians and regular experts who will be on standby 24/7 during the national games week. They are assigned to 49 venues in four districts or cities where the sporting competitions will be held, namely Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Mimika Regency, and Merauke Regency.

In addition to the host cities/districts, Telkom also deployed teams nationwide in other parts of Indonesia to mitigate risks on the Sulawesi-Maluku-Papua Cable System (SMPCS) network, which includes the East Palapa Ring network, satellites, radio towers, submarine cables, and national and international network monitoring that are centered in Jakarta and Bandung.

Telkom Enterprise & Business Service Director Edi Witjara who directly supervises the team on the ground in Jayapura said, "as an official platinum telco partner, Telkom is committed to make the 20th PON a success in terms of capacity and quality. We have also prepared dozens of assistants in green vests bearing Telkom logo on standby at the sporting venues and contact center service hotlines to facilitate the PON committee in obtaining information and making the most of TelkomGroup services conveniently."

Edi said "TelkomGroup provides digital connectivity, digital platform, and digital service in sporting venues, hotels and accommodations, as well as airports. Especially for hotel guests, we have also upgraded the bandwidth in 22 hotels in Jayapura, Abepura, Timika, and Merauke.”

Telkom in general provides internet services with more than 11.5 Gbps bandwidth, equipped with a backup system. To anticipate cyber attacks, Telkom collaborates on network security with various parties including the Ministry of Communication and Information, BSSN, the police and the armed forces.

Telkom provides 142 units of IndiHome cable-based internet connection facilities (fixed broadband) installed in several main locations, including the athletes' village to meet the needs of the competing contingents. In addition, 427 wireless internet access points (WiFi) are available for free for the public in sporting venues and public spaces. Telkom also provides two satellite news gatherings and four media centers; the main media center in Jayapura City and three smaller ones in Jayapura, Mimika, and Merauke districts.

Telkom through its subsidiary Telkomsel also ensures that cellular service signals are strengthened by deploying 192 BTS and maintaining the availability of electrical energy supply for priority BTS by having dozens of generators and Mobile Power Supply Support (SCD) on standby, as well as optimizing battery capacity in each BTS. During the 20th PON, Telkomsel will also introduce "Telkomsel 5G Experience Center" at the Lukas Enembe Stadium to visitors, especially the Papuan community, to get the best experience in utilizing revolutionary technology through use cases equipped with 5G technology.

"As we have concluded the tests and are all ready, we are optimistic that we can provide the best digital service experience for the community at the 20th PON in Papua," Edi said.
