Telkom Supports Former Terrorism Convicts Empowerment Through Entrepreneurship Training Programs

One of Telkom's entrepreneurship training programs for former terrorism convicts was held in Lamongan Regency with 30 participants.

 

Jakarta, 3 March 2023 - Empowering young people from all levels of society is a way to boost individual economic independence, including that of former terrorism convicts. PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) in collaboration with the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises and the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT), held an entrepreneurship training program for the former convicts, aimed to empower them to be financially independent and to eradicate terrorism and radicalism in Indonesia.

The entrepreneurship training for former terrorism convicts has been held over the past three years in three East Java districts namely Lamongan, Malang and Sidoarjo, involving 30 participants in each district. Each of the training was held effectively with interactive training methods during which the former inmates were able to learn about marketing, business management, packaging design for export, in collaboration with agencies in the export-import sector, to screen printing and cooking training.

Telkom also provides support to the former inmates through this training, which consists of financial assistance for working tools and educational scholarship for children of the former inmates who are going through economic hardship. These two assistance have been distributed well to training participants in the three regions with a total value of more than 800 million rupiah. Moreover, the former inmates' micro, small, and medium enterprises can become part of Telkom-assisted small, medium enterprises and receive regular guidance and assistance, after they participated in the entrepreneurship training and have adequate work tools. 

Telkom SGM Community Development Center Hery Susanto, said participants of Telkom entrepreneurship training program can establish businesses in other fields apart from those in the training. Participants can explore more broadly about their respective interests and expertise to determine the business most suitable for them, to which Telkom will also provide the required work tool support. "Recipients of these assistance and training are expected to be able to utilize the knowledge they learn during the training and to implement it in their business activities," Hery said.

These training and assistance programs are expected to boost the former convicts' productivity, to prevent them from being exposed again to terrorism, which could risk the harmful acts to happen again. This training is also aimed to assist the former terrorism convicts to have more independence in their efforts to establish their businesses. This program enables Telkom to be more directly involved in positive community development in line with the target Sustainable Development Goals' 11th goal to encourage an increase in sustainable community economic welfare as well as the sustainability and quality of the social environment in Indonesia.
