Jakarta, 31 January 2021 – PT Telkom Indonesia Tbk (Telkom) won the "Honorable Mention" award at the 2021 BUMN Corporate Communications and Sustainability Summit (BCOMSS). Telkom Director of Human Capital Management Director Afriwandi at the 2021 BCOMSS received the award during the awarding night Friday (29/1) in Jakarta.

Telkom received an Honorable Mention Award in the Creating Shared Value for its Waste to Gold program with the #DaurBikinMakmur (recycle for welfare) campaign, which has created new jobs and helped to protect the environment in Tuksongo Village, Magelang Regency, Central Java. BUMN (State Owned Enterprise/SOE) Corporate Communications and Sustainability Summit for corporate communications and sustainability programs for state-owned enterprises.

Telkom Human Capital Management Director Afriwandi said this award is a recognition of Telkom's sustainability initiatives. "This award is proof of Telkom's commitment to protecting the environment as well as improving people's welfare, which is expected to help to reduce poverty in Indonesia, especially during the pandemic. This Honorable Mention is a motivation for Telkom employees at all levels to continue innovating and providing the best for the community," Afriwandi said.

Tuksongo Village is located close to Borobudur Temple, one of the main tourist destinations in Indonesia. As the number of tourists increases every year, the waste they generate also increases. There are 12 tons of garbage piled up every day, out of which 30-40% is plastic. There was no real effort to reduce plastic waste in Borobudur Temple and the surrounding villages.

On the other hand, plastic waste still has some benefit for the surrounding community, as long as they know how to process and recycle plastic waste. With this background, Tuksongo Village Economic Agency (Balkondes) collaborated with Telkom to come up with an initiative, to raise the villagers’ awareness to care about and be creative in handling plastic waste.

Other concrete steps taken include the launch of #DaurBikinMakmur (recycle for welfare) program, by using tools used to recycle plastic, such as a shredder, injection, and extrusion - a shredder, or a tool that functions to chop plastic chunks into small pieces, and turn them into plastic flakes as required and then prints the plastic waste into new items. In addition, Telkom assisted with these new items sales and marketing.

Not only that, Telkom also encourages the surrounding community to collect plastic waste discarded by tourists. Residents can get Rp10,000 for every kilogram of plastic waste they collect.

Afriwandi said, thanks to the #DaurBikinMakmur program, the villagers are now smarter in managing waste. The community has started to do their own waste selection.

Meanwhile, Telkom Magelang will in the near future develop an IT system to monitor projects and the waste in-and-out, to a general sale process.
