Handover of Multimedia PC Facility Assistance as a Form of Commitment to Support Equal Education for the Disabled in Indonesia

Jakarta, 5 December 2023 – PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) is committed to supporting just education for people with disabilities by assisting with facilities to support disabled children's learning process. The facility is a multimedia PC equipped with software and hardware that can facilitate alternative communications, such as text messaging or even voice synthesis. Telkom's assistance included the i-CHAT, an application designed to facilitate communication between individuals with hearing and speech impairments. By using the i-CHAT application, people with hearing impairments can communicate with family, friends, and the general public more smoothly and confidently.

To support inclusive education in Indonesia, Telkom is committed to assisting schools for the disabled in 50 locations in West Java, East Java, North Sumatra, and West Kalimantan. Each type B school for the disabled was given two units of assistance, with one unit allocated for the laboratory and one unit for school administration. This activity has been in place since September 2023 and is expected to continue to ensure a just and inclusive education for all levels of society.

"Access to quality education is the right of every individual. Therefore, Telkom continues to support efforts for a just education, notably by providing facilities and infrastructure, hoping that all students with disabilities will be able to explore themselves to the fullest without any communication gaps as an obstacle," Telkom SGM Community Development Center Hery Susanto said.

As of 2020 in Indonesia, there were roughly 144,621 children with special needs who were registered to be studying, among whom were 82,326 disabled students at elementary school, 36,884 disabled students at junior high school, and 25,411 disabled students at at high school level. All students certainly have the same right to receive quality education.

However, there are still many schools for the disabled that lack facilities and infrastructure which hinders the teaching and learning process. According to data from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, there are about 13,000 special schools in Indonesia. Of this number, only around 30% have adequate facilities. This condition is contrary to Government Regulation Number 13 of 2020 on proper accommodation for students with disabilities.

Therefore, Telkom as a leading, state-owned digital telecommunications company, is committed to always carrying out its social responsibility programs, especially for inclusive education. This assistance is expected to enable more children with disabilities to have equal opportunities to participate in society.
