Telkom Launched BigBox, Indonesia’s One Data Solution

Jakarta, 2 December 2020 – Information and communication technology development sets a unique challenge for an industry where data is increasingly distributed, unintegrated, with no standardization and difficulties in data interoperability. Responding to challenges and obstacles on data management in Indonesia, PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) introduced BigBox, a big data analytics solution for the Indonesia One Data program that the government initiated. 

Deputy State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Kartiko Wirjoatmodjo, Telkom President Commissioner Rhenald Kasali, Telkom President Director Ririek Adriansyah, Telkom Digital Business Director M. Fajrin Rasyid, and BigBox founder Muhammad Sigit Pramudya launched BigBox online in a video conference. In addition to the BigBox launch, a panel discussion with the theme "Enabling One Indonesia" was also held, which featured Central Java Governor, represented by the Head of the Central Java Information and Communication Agency Riena Retnaningrum, Telkom Digital Business Director M. Fajrin Rasyid, and Deputy Executive Vice President of Digital Platform & Telkom Enabler Komang Budi Aryasa as panelists. 

President Joko Widodo on 12 June 2019 issued Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 39/2019 on Satu Data Indonesia (Indonesia One Data), on the government data management policy to produce integrated, accurate, up-to-date, integrated, and accountable data, which is easy to access and share. This government initiative is aimed at improving and enhancing data governance quality, for policy making purposes and providing public data needs for the people.

Deputy SOE Minister welcomes Telkom's measure  step in launching BigBox as a solution to realizing Indonesia One Data, which is a government policy to support data-based, decision-making processes. "This big data service provides a comprehensive data solution and is expected to be widely used by government agencies, SOEs, the business community, and the public," Kartika Wirjoatmodjo said.

Meanwhile, Telkom President Director Ririek Adriansyah said that BigBox is a manifestation of Telkom’s contribution in utilizing data for the public at large. 

"BigBox is part of the focus of the digital business that Telkom is developing, notably in order to accelerate digital platforms development, in line with our transformation into a digital telecommunications company. The role of BigBox services in managing and interpreting data is an important key that can be optimized as competitive advantages for agencies and corporations in Indonesia. We hope that the service will be able to optimally boost a faster economic growth in Indonesia. Moreover, with BigBox, we also encourage digital talents at Telkom and SOEs to collaborate in exploring the potential of big data and be able to provide the best service for everyone," Ririek said.

BigBox is an end-to-end big data platform that Amoeba produced as its incubation model for the company's internal startup. According to the International Data Center (IDC) Benchmark Analysis Report released on November 2020, its key products/features are data integration, data lake, workflow management, search engines, data exploration and insight, realtime dashboard, API factory, and crawling engine. The IDC report is based on the products of BigBox’s horizontal platform which consists of 8 modules (BigLake, BigSpider, BigAction, BigSearch, BigQuery, BigBuilder, BigFlow, and BigEnvelope).

BigBox also has a vertical platform, namely the social media analytic platform (BigSocial), e-commerce analytic platform (BigCommerce) and one data management platform (BigOne). Especially for BigOne, Telkom will promote it to become the Indonesia One Data platform nationwide. BigBox is believed to be able to fulfill all the requirements that the Indonesia One Data platform needs, from an integrated and easily accessible data environment, data processing, accurate and accountable analytics, to generating insights for decision making and a marketplace API (Application Programming Interface) that makes it easy to share and to use data. 

Although it was launched recently, BigBox development shows that it has been tried and tested in various cases of big data implementation, such as the integration of 5,518 gas stations data sources, which have even earned BigBox with a number of national and international recognitions, namely the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO), Data Impact Awards, APAC CIO Outlook to an award at the BUMN Millennial Innovation Summit 2020.
