Jakarta, 26 April 2022 - One of the causes of climate change is the increase of carbon dioxide gas concentration, which generates greenhouse gas effects and results in the occurring global environmental changes, including in Indonesia. PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) therefore strives to make the best contribution to overcome these conditions through various environmental conservation programs in order to rebuild a balanced ecosystem and reduce the impact of climate change.

As a driving force for the acceleration of Indonesia's digitization, Telkom initiated the environmental sector’s digitalization through a digital-based reforestation and conservation program for forests that fosters using Geographic Information System (GIS) as a monitoring system for tree growth. This digital-based restoration and conservation initiative takes place in Buru Masigit Kareumbi Park and Karangtengah in Garut Regency.

GIS is able to increase forest inventory data, facilitate the process of improving forest conditions, plan for adequate short-term improvements, improve forest growth, collect data on the number and types of trees and report on growth and development of reforestation products on a regular basis.

In addition, Telkom organizes coral reef conservation programs in Badul Island of Sumur District, Pandeglang Regency by involving fishermen and the local natural community. This is the second time that Telkom supports coral reef conservation areas expansion by providing 500 spider shelves as planting media. This program is expected to contribute to coral reef ecosystems protection, which is an important component in marine ecosystems preservation and the survival and growth of coastal ecosystems.

Telkom also planted in March 20,000 mangrove seedlings at the Semarang Mangrove Center (SMC) Mangunharjo, Semarang. The event, taglined "Prevent Abrasion, Save Generations" was carried out to build a shield in coastal areas from the abrasion threats and as part of Telkom’s  Sustainable Development Goals program for the surrounding community. Manager Community Development Center of Telkom Regional IV Division of Central Java-Yogyakarta Special Region Siwi Widiarto said this coastal reforestation program was in line with Telkom's flagship program.

"Telkom always strives to be present directly in the community, one of which is through this abrasion prevention program, It is expected to contribute to reducing the greenhouse effect to support effective climate change mitigation," Siwi said.

Senior General Manager of Community Development Center Hery Susanto said, ”This movement is Telkom's simultaneous response to the impacts of climate change that affect coastal and marine ecosystems, including mangroves and coral reefs. We hope through this program, Telkom can actively contribute in supporting climate change mitigation.”

Hery said that coral reefs have an important role as a source of food, spawning, nurturing, and foraging for marine biota. In addition, according to him, coral reefs also serve as a source of germ plasm and a place for recreation and beach protection.

Mangrove forests have a very vital role for the environment, namely as plants that are able to withstand the sea water currents from coastal land erosion, or in other words, mangrove plants are able to prevent sea water from eroding the soil on the shoreline and damaging reforestation. "Reforestation is a step we can take to restore green areas. Reforestation is more than just a solution to improve forest conditions, it is also a solution to overcome climate change in the world," Hery said.
