Empowering women through hygiene & sanitation training for tourism village homestay managers

Batam, 15 December 2023 – A subsidiary of PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom), PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Internasional (Telin) and Batam International University (UIB) held a hygiene and sanitation training for 38 women from four Sambau-Batam Subdistrict's Kampung Tua Nongsa villages, namely Kampung Tua Teluk Mata Ikan, Bakau Serip, Kampung Terih, and Nongsa Pantai). 

Telin and UIB saw that Nosa Tourism Village has a lot of potential to develop its tourism and created a sustainable program by organizing hygiene and sanitation training for Nongsa Tourism Village Homestay managers to improve its facilities' cleanliness for its tourists' convenience. 

"This is part of our Christmas and New Year 2023 activities which we Telin regularly have twice a year, during the Christmas and New Year holiday and Ramadan Eid al-Fitr season in each of our network area offices in Indonesia and our global offices outside Indonesia. Through the ESG pillar #TelinforCommunity, we hope to continue to strengthen our commitment to improving our stakeholders' quality of life, in this case, coastal communities, especially women, through ongoing training so that they can have more skills to help provide additional income for their families," Telin CEO, Budi Satria Dharma Purba said.

UIB with its academic credentials also supports various sustainable development programs in Indonesia, including organizing training with Telin. “This is an important process in developing a sustainable tourist village. Homestay managers are equipped with the knowledge and skills to maintain personal hygiene, the cleanliness of their houses homestay facilities, and a clean environment. This is an effort to increase the number of visitors in tourist villages," Chancellor of UIB, Dr. Iskandar Itan said.

Kampung Tua Nongsa has natural tourism potential with a diversity of flora and fauna, mangrove conservation and education, as well as beach tourism and cultural tourism, from which it can focus on cultural tourism and ecotourism with a community-based friendly tourism concept, by empowering the local communities in its management. The tourism services of Kampung Tua Nongsa Tourism Village are focused on providing services for tourists interested in the village's attractive and uniquely beautiful natural landscape, and its community's socio-cultural activities, which are reflected in the customs system, cultural patterns, and local wisdom as well as observing Batam City's villages and rural communities' lives in Nongsa coastal area.

The village also has eco-tourism destinations with white sandy beaches with views facing Singapura and Malaysia. This ecotourism offers a friendly tourism concept and is guided by the values of benefiting from its natural surroundings, its society, and education. This is very important for the survival of living creatures in the surrounding area because it is the basis for the formation of marine ecosystem food chains, and can prevent disasters and coastal erosion.

As part of the environmental, social, and governance pillar, this training is expected to be the start of both institutions' contribution to coastal area communities so that the communities would have additional skills for the future. Through this training, the local community is expected to be able to make Kampung Tua Nongsa a tourist village that can provide benefits and attract tourists to visit.
