Jakarta, 17 May 2021 – Voice and data services of PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) including IndiHome and Telkomsel in Jayapura, have increasingly improved in quality following the disruption on the Sulawesi Maluku Papua Cable System (SMPCS) submarine cable communication system for the Biak - Jayapura section, 280 km from Biak and 360 km from Jayapura on April 30, 2021. To date, TelkomGroup’s bandwidth capacity in Jayapura reached 4.7 Gbps, with the support of 2,662 Mbps satellite link, 500Mbps East Palapa Ring long haul radio and Sarmi long haul radio – Biak 1,600 Mbps.

Telkom Vice President of Corporate Communication, Pujo Pramono said, "the quality of TelkomGroup services in Jayapura remains a priority for us to restore. Thank God, 4.762 Gbps of TelkomGroup’s bandwidth capacity has been restored in Jayapura. Customers can now enjoy Telkomsel and IndiHome voice and data services, by adjusting with the available bandwidth. We are grateful for the support and trust of our loyal customers who use TelkomGroup services, especially in Jayapura and its surroundings, where it was disrupted.

The target to finish restoring the broken SMPCS section is in the first week of June 2021, given it requires a special ship to reconnect the undersea cable.

“To reconnect the submarine cables, we are preparing several items required for special vessel deployment, such as licensing, the availability of experts who would reconnect the cables and the equipment. We are setting a target to finish lifting and reconnecting the cables in the first week of June 2021. However, it is still possible to accelerate it if we can conduct the search and reconnection faster than the estimated time. We will try to fix it as soon as possible,” Pujo added.

The temporary cause of the broken fibre optic cable is allegedly due to natural factors, but given that the disconnected cable is 4,050 meters deep, Telkom would only be able to identify the cause after removing the cable from the sea. "We will continue to strive to accelerate recovering services in Jayapura so that customers can resume their activities. Customer convenience is surely the focus of this restoration," Pujo said.
